E-mail proposals to cratespace@gmail.com by November 28, 2007.

The Unpacked/Offset exhibition, http://unpacked-offset.wikispaces.com, is scheduled to take place in the Rotunda Gallery of the NIU Art Museum in DeKalb, Illinois from late March through mid-May of 2008.

I am soliciting proposals for participation in this exhibit. This is a rare opportunity for students to be involved in an exhibition at a museum that is dedicated to professional artwork. There will be a color publication featuring all of the participants.

I would like to encourage dialog via the blogsite to expand and inform the experience. It isn't just a conduit for proposals but a platform for communication. In other words, you do not need to submit a proposal to post a comment. Please post any comments about the project or questions about the crates via the internal "comments" links or e-mail cratespace@gmail.com.

Thank you for your interest in the project,
Gabriel Bizen Akagawa

"The Crate Project"

"The Crate Project"
I originally acquired eleven crates that were headed for a city dump. Instead of allowing them to consume more space in a landfill, reuse seemed to be in order. The crates were crafted by one of the leading art moving companies in Chicago. They, like almost all shipping crates for art works, were custom built. After that purpose has been fulfilled, they are disposed of. Rarely can they be recycled due to the glue, foam, and screws and staples used in their construction. These particular crates held Arts and Crafts Furniture that have toured the world. There are currently nine crates for this collaborative art project.
